Global Preservation Projects Forms Energy Research Group

Formed in April 2006 in response to the highest global temperatures in at least the past two thousand years or more AOL News - Earth's Temperature Is Hottest in Centuries (June 22, 2006) the GPP Energy Research Group will look into simple ways that CO2 (carbon dioxide) gases can be reduced by as much as two gigatons per year.

Global Preservation Projects Energy Research Group is an invitational think tank organization of volunteers that produces & tests prototype systems to help reduce global warming. It has no funding other than donations from members, outside individuals, manufactures of vegetable processing & installation systems (for testing purposes) or groups or licensing fees from production facilities. This group only supports good repeatable scientific research; it is non-political and will not take political sides. This group will seek outside independent testing of all prototypes by scientific universities for certification.

The Problem

The United States is 5% of the world’s population and produces 25% of the worlds CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. GPPs’ goal is to find realistic immediate solutions to reduce the US emissions to no more than 5% of the world CO2 production. To end the United States reign as the largest polluter on the planet. The United States has the lowest mileage requirements for its vehicles of any country in the world other than Australia. It is no wonder how the US became the world’s number one polluter...

GPP does not expect the Unites States government to change the CO2 emissions standards during the current administration, so it is looking to find ways that cost no more or are cheaper that the current systems that can be implemented immediately. Rapidly rising green house gases have shortened the time we have to react. A one degree rise in temperature at the equator will result in a twelve degree difference at the poles. This is causing the glaciers and the polar caps to melt at such an alarming rate that it is very possible that they will alter or stop the ocean currents that bring warm water from the equator to the northern hemisphere. Even more frightening is the melting of the tundra with it’s massive amounts of decaying material which would release as much as 100 times or more the CO2 that all of human activity (Time Magazine April 3, 2006). This could plunge North America, Europe and Russia into an instant ice age if allowed to continue.

Some people have told GPP that there is no way anything we do will ever make a difference. This may be very true. However, doing nothing is guaranteed to never make a difference. The price of doing nothing could be the end of society as we know it today. If the environment is allowed to fail the cost in human life and property would be millions of times higher than the cost to fix the problem now. Extremes in weather and melting polar caps threaten the human races’ very existence on this planet. With the current conditions, an instant Ice Age is very possible in our lifetimes; if this occurred as much as 60% of the planets population could be lost. There is very little time to reverse the affects of global warming, people must make their own choice to be a part of the solution or part of the problem. Becoming part of the solution will make a better world for us all. If we fail a very large number of humans will go the way of the dinosaurs. Perhaps the best thing to do is to let the system fail and start over again with 60% less people and a much greater appreciation for the environment.

Areas of concern

GPP’s research is focused on using existing technology, finding simple and affordable solutions that can be implemented very, very quickly. There are many more solutions that already exist. However, GPP must focus on those that hold the most promise for the quickest results.

Three areas of concern have been identified:

1 Vehicle pollution-Approximately one third of CO2 pollution is from vehicles. Diesel vehicles are the best to address since they show up to a 78% reduction in CO2 by switching to vegetable based diesel, which is a totally renewable fuel source. Also, diesels move all goods, with trucks, trains and buses. Addressing diesel pollution keeps the economy from going into inflation. There are no workable short term solutions for gas vehicles at this time, other than mandating SUVs get at least 35 MPG and starting a buy back program to remove the SUVs from US roads that do not get at least 22 MPG. (Most countries require vehicles to get at least 35 MPG) Just removing low mileage SUVs from the roads may reduce pollution by as much as 8-10%.

2 Home produced pollution- 41% of CO2 pollution comes from homes. This is an area individuals can make a difference with some help if less expensive solutions become available.

3, Industry- Industry is the worse source of pollution and protected from any short term solutions. This source of pollution will have to change over time with massive public pressure. Without government support only limited success is possible.

The Diesel solution

GPP selected diesel fuel as the most likely area to make an immediate difference in the shortest period of time. Vegetable diesel is a carbon neutral fuel. Vegetable diesel is also, available as used cooking oil (over 3 billion gallons per year) and can be made by anyone who would like to produce their own fuel. GPP is currently working on testing vegetable oil to replace or supplement petroleum diesel fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. GPP is currently testing a 50/50 mixture with no problems. GPP is working on testing 100% vegetable based fuel systems using petroleum diesel only as a start up and shut down fuel. The results from GPP’s research are very promising will be released as soon as it is complete.

In a study by the national bio-diesel board in 1998, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, concluded vegetable diesel (also commonly referred to as Bio-diesel) reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel. Using just 2% vegetable diesel blend in diesel fuel would curtail harmful emissions. It has the potential to reduce poisonous carbon monoxide (CO2) emissions annually by more than 35 million pounds, reduce ozone forming hydrocarbon emissions by almost 4 million pounds, reduce hazardous diesel particulate emissions by almost 3 million pounds and reduce acid rain-causing sulfur dioxide emissions by more than 3 million pounds.

Burning of fossil diesel fuels puts pollutants into the atmosphere. Vegetable diesel gives back more energy to the environment that it takes. Studies show that for every unit of fossil energy it takes to produce fossil fuel, 3.2 units of energy are gained during the vegetable diesel making process. This study took into account the planting and harvesting of the soy or canola as well as its transportation, production and distribution to the end user.

One of the biggest benefits to vegetable diesel making is that it helps to reduce the United States dependence on foreign oil. Vegetable diesel could end North America's reliance imported diesel petroleum. Having the ability to produce your own vegetable diesel is also a way of keeping your costs down during national emergencies such as the devastating hurricanes that recently hit the Gulf coast refineries.

The United States could within three to four years produce all of its’ vegetable diesel from algae for as little as $1.65 per gallon and become an energy exporter. A new energy industry would have to be established or would have to partner with big oil to make this a reality. Whoever does this will reduce CO2 by a significant amount and make billions of dollars.

There are many political reasons why making Vegetable diesel has gotten the attention of both fuel manufacturers and those who prefer to make their own homemade veggie diesel. Some car manufacturers are seeing the wisdom of creating vehicles that can use a veggie diesel product by creating a diesel car that is friendly to the use of vegetable oil blended with diesel fuel.
